If the soil doesn&#8217;t freeze hard in your area, you can probably grow these peppers as a perennial. It will freeze to the ground but return in the spring. The bright green pointed leaves and the green-to-red fruit make an attractive plant for herb garden or landscape border.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"content_img.6455.img.jpg\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/sandonspaldingstaging.com\/DirtDr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/content_img.6455.img.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Location<\/b>: Full sun or part shade and requires almost no care. Able to survive drought and flood, little fertility, birds do love these peppers.<\/p>\n<p><b>Culture<\/b>: Easy to grow from seed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Uses:<\/b><span>  <\/span>Can be used in place of any hot peppers in recipes.<span>  <\/span>The commercial hot sauce brand Cholula lists bird peppers as one of its ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>Popular for use in pepper vinegar.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bd cup chile pequin peppers<\/p>\n<p>\u00bd cup white vinegar<\/p>\n<p>Clean a previously used or new pepper shaker bottle with boiling water.<\/p>\n<p>Fill the bottle with chilies. Heat the vinegar in a small saucepan over low heat until it steams slightly and put vinegar over the peppers to the top of the bottle.<\/p>\n<p>Allow to sit for a few days before using. Can be refilled with vinegar several times. Keep refrigerated.<\/p>\n<p>Attracting mockingbirds \u2013 they eat the small peppers like jellybeans.<\/p>\n<p><b>Note<\/b>: Thomas Jefferson first obtained seed of the Bird Pepper in 1812 from Captain Samuel Brown, who was stationed in San Antonio, Texas.
